Here's a full rundown of titles scheduled to arrive on each service: Dickinson (Apple TV+, Fall) - A half-hour comedy series starring Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld. Created by Alena Smith, Dickinson audaciously explores the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of rebellious young poet Emily Dickinson. The Spy (Netflix, September 6) - Inspired by the real-life story of former Mossad agent, Eli Cohen, who successfully goes undercover in Syria in the early 1960s. Cohen becomes close enough to ambitious military leaders and their rich friends to earn a game-changing level of trust about Syria’s biggest anti-Israel secret initiatives. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen Bill Burr: Paper Tiger (Netflix, September 10) - Stand-up comedian, actor, and podcaster, Bill Burr, delivers a scathing review on the state of the world in his new Netflix stand-up comedy special, Bill Burr: Paper Tiger. Filmed in front of a packed house at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, Burr dives into Michelle Obama’s book tour, the problem with male feminists, his hang-ups on taking a bath, and why his personality is affecting his marriage. The I-Land: Season 1 (Netflix, September 12) - When ten people wake up on a treacherous island with no memory of who they are or how they got there, they set off on a trek to try to get back home. They soon discover this world is not as it seems. Faced with the I-Land’s extreme psychological and physical challenges, they must rise to their better selves -- or die as their worst ones. The Ranch: Part 7 (Netflix, September 13) - Set in present day on a Colorado ranch outside Denver, this multi-camera family comedy series stars Ashton Kutcher, Sam Elliott, Debra Winger and Elisha Cuthbert. The show follows Colt’s (Kutcher) return home after a brief and failed semi-pro football career to run the family ranching business with his father Beau (Elliott). Winger stars as Colt’s mother, Maggie, and Cuthbert stars as Abby (Colt's soon to be fiancé). Marianne (Netflix, September 13) - When a horror novelist takes a break from writing, she discovers the demon from her book exists in the real world. This malevolent spirit named Marianne draws her home and insists she continues writing... or else. Disenchantment: Part 2 (Netflix, September 20) - In Disenchantment, viewers will be whisked away to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools. The King (Netflix, Fall) - Hal (Timothée Chalamet), wayward prince and reluctant heir to the English throne, has turned his back on royal life and is living among the people. But when his tyrannical father dies, Hal is crowned King Henry V and is forced to embrace the life he had previously tried to escape. Now the young king must navigate the palace politics, chaos and war his father left behind, and the emotional strings of his past life — including his relationship with his closest friend and mentor, the ageing alcoholic knight, John Falstaff (Joel Edgerton). Directed by David Michôd and co-written by Michôd and Edgerton, The King co-stars Sean Harris, Ben Mendelsohn, Robert Pattinson, and Lily-Rose Depp. Lady and the Tramp (Disney+, November 12) - In Disney+’s Lady and the Tramp, a timeless re-telling of the 1955 animated classic, a pampered house dog and a tough but lovable stray embark on an unexpected adventure and, despite their differences, grow closer and come to understand the value of home. Noelle (Disney+, November 12) - In Disney+'s holiday comedy Noelle, Kris Kringle’s daughter is full of Christmas spirit and holiday fun, but wishes she could do something “important” like her beloved brother Nick, who will take over from their father this Christmas. When Nick is about to crumble like a gingerbread cookie from all the pressure, Noelle suggests he take a break and get away…but when he doesn’t return, Noelle must find her brother and bring him back in time to save Christmas. The World According to Jeff Goldblum (Disney+, November 12) - Documentary series in which Goldblum pulls back the curtain on a seemingly familiar object to reveal a world of astonishing connections, fascinating science, and a whole lot of big ideas. Encore! (Disney+, November 12) - Executive Producer Kristen Bell brings together former castmates of a high school musical, tasking them with re-creating their original performance in a high school reunion like no other. Emotions run high as the former students face faded friendships, former flames, self-doubt, and killer choreography. Through it all, these unlikely groups of friends—with the help of Broadway's best—just might pull off a standing-ovation-worthy performance of beloved musicals like The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast, Annie and more. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (Disney+, November 12) - The 10-episode scripted series, set as the real-life East High, where the original movie was filmed, follows a group of students as they countdown to opening night of their school's first-ever production of "High School Musical." With meta references and some docu-style elements, it's a modern take on the "classic" from 15 years ago. Show-mances blossom; friendships are tested, while new ones are made; rivalries flare; songs are sung; and lives are changed forever as these young people discover the transformative power that only high school theater can provide. Finally, MotorTrend has announced the addition of Top Gear to its streaming lineup. Subscribers to the MotorTrend app can now access 170 episodes of the UK Top Gear series from seasons 2 through 25; the Top Gear UK India Special; three seasons (19 total episodes) of Top Gear: Extra Gear; and episodes 1 through 5 of the MotorTrend exclusive Best of Top Gear. - A current Netflix subscription starts at $13 per month for HD streaming and $16 per month for Ultra HD streaming. - Disney+ is set to launch on November 12 for $6.99 per month or $69.99 for an annual subscription. - Pricing and a launch date for Apple TV+ have not been announced yet, but the service is expected to debut this fall. - A current MotorTrend subscription costs $5 per month. Trinnov Set to Demo 11.4.6 DTS:X Pro Immersive Audio System at CEDIA 2019[teaser]The company will present the North American debut of DTS:X Pro in September. [/teaser] Trinnov has announced plans to demo DTS:X Pro technology at CEDIA 2019. Building upon the standard DTS:X platform, the upgraded tech greatly expands the maximum number of unique channels a user can configure. "Trinnov has been collaborating with the DTS team since 2014, leading to the first public demo of DTS:X at CES 2015 on an Altitude32 processor," said Arnaud Laborie, Trinnov's co-founder and CEO. "Our unique software-based platform consistently enables us to release new formats before other high-end home cinema processors, which means that our design allows us to deliver the latest technologies to our customers at their earliest availability. This was the case with DTS:X, and by continuing to work closely with DTS, we are now very pleased to be able to introduce DTS:X Pro, as the first licensee of this technology. This accomplishment is yet another example of our commitment to high spatial resolution.” DTS:X is an immersive audio format developed for cinemas and home theaters which enables object-based sound mixing and playback, including the ability to position effects overhead. While the commercial theater implementation of the tech can support up to 64 uniquely-rendered channels, the consumer version has been limited to 11.1 channels. But with the new DTS:X Pro update, that number will now be greatly expanded upon, offering support for up to 30.2 discrete speaker outputs. The DTS:X Pro demo at CEDIA 2019 will feature an 11.4.6 channel immersive audio system using Trinnov Altitude audio processors and Control4/Triad speakers in a custom-built HTE acoustical environment. Though an exact release date has not been announced yet, DTS:X Pro support will be available for current Trinnov Altitude32 and Altitude16 processors via a free download later this year. CEDIA 2019 will be held in Denver, Colorado on September 12 - September 15. Source: TrinnovPosted Fri Aug 30, 2019 at 02:30 PM PDT by: -

UHD Alliance Announces "Filmmaker Mode" for More Accurate Picture on 4K TVs[teaser]Say goodbye to motion smoothing![/teaser] The UHD Alliance has announced the development of a new Filmmaker Mode for consumer 4K HDR TVs. Produced in partnership with several prominent Hollywood filmmakers and display manufacturers, the new TV calibration setting is designed to simplify the process of providing an accurate out-of-the-box image. The mode can be activated through a dedicated button on a TV's remote or automatically via metadata triggered by the content being played. Once turned on, Filmmaker Mode disables pesky post-processing features like motion smoothing, sharpening, and noise reduction -- which can all create an unnatural looking image. Likewise, the setting also ensures that accurate colors, frame rates, and aspect ratios are maintained. Together, these one-click adjustments all help to create an image that preserves the director's original intent with support for both SDR and HDR10 material. Compatibility with Dolby Vision content is also a likely possibility but, I believe the UHDA is still waiting on Dolby to confirm Filmmaker Mode doesn't mess up anything required to make Dolby Vision work on a particular TV. (A Dolby rep attended the launch event, but we weren't able to find him for a direct quote.) Current manufacturers on board to implement Filmmaker Mode into their products include LG, VIZIO, and Panasonic. Likewise, the setting is being championed by an extensive collection of directors, including Rian Johnson, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, J.J. Abrams, Ava Duvernay, Paul Thomas Anderson, The Duffer Brothers, and more. "When Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Patty Jenkins, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan reached out to the UHDA about extending the cinematic experience into the living room, we were eager and ideally situated to engage in the conversation," said UHD Alliance Chairman, Michael Zink of Warner Bros. "The Ultra HD TVs from supporting CE members are capable of delivering a range of viewing options and the addition of Filmmaker Mode for cinematic content, which is based on input from a broad range of preeminent filmmakers, provides a way for consumers to better experience the filmmaker’s vision." Filmmaker Mode Hands-On As part of the Filmmaker Mode launch even in Los Angeles, the UHDA brought along a $30,000 Sony reference monitor -- the kind used to color grade movies for cinemas and home entertainment -- as well as a Filmmaker Mode-equipped prototype LCD TV that "cost around $1,500. Based on the graphic user interface and its distinct legs, my guess is that it was an entry-level Vizio E or M model. We then watched side-by-side clips from Dunkirk and The Phantom Thread on both displays while toggling the prototype between Filmmaker Mode and what they called "Typical Mode." Typical Mode isn't actually available on Vizio TVs (thank god), but it represented an amalgamation of what many TVs look like in random bars and your mom's living room. In other words, imaging turning on (or being stuck with) every awful processing mode possible with gobs of motion interpolation and blindingly-cool color temperatures. Typical mode turned the green and yellow-tinged moody beach scenes of Dunkirk into a lovely, sunny day and The Phantom Thread looked equally awful. Filmmaker Mode, by contrast, was free of any extra processing and the color pallet matched the reference monitor quite well. In short, if Filmmaker Mode looks this good on an average TV, I suspect it will stun on great TVs. It's important to point out that Filmmaker Mode isn't a format, nor can it make a $1,500 LCD look a stunning and perfect as a $30,000 (CRT?). Filmmaker Mode simply tells your TV to get as close to the source material as it possibly can. In regards to calibrations, they're still the best way to get the most out of any given TV, but Filmmaker Mode is more designed for the vast majority of TV owners who don't change any TV settings, let alone perform a complex calibration. In the future, Filmmaker Mode may work automatically, using metadata encoded into a movie, but for now, it'll likely be a button on your remote. Honestly, after seeing so many awful-looking TVs in restaurants, hotels, and other public places, I hope folks who love movies use Filmmaker Mode often and with enthusiasm. Availability Specific display models set to include Filmmaker Mode have not been announced yet, but VIZIO will be including the option in its 2020 TV lineup. Likewise, the company is also looking into the possibility of offering the mode on some current and older models via a firmware update. Meanwhile, Panasonic is expected to announce displays with Filmmaker Mode at the upcoming IFA tradeshow, though the company still has no plans to release TVs in the US. Dolby Withdraws Restrictions on Third Party Up-Mixing for Dolby Audio Codecs[teaser]The company will no longer seek to prevent devices from using DTS upmixing on Dolby tracks.[/teaser] Dolby has officially withdrawn all restrictions on the use of first and third-party post-processing and up-mixing technologies on its audio formats. The decision comes after Xperi, owners of rival audio brand DTS, launched complaints against Dolby's original policy with regulatory agencies. Prior to the reversal, Dolby was aiming to limit a device's ability to use audio post-processing technologies from other companies when playing back content using a Dolby codec. This meant that AVR, sound bar, and TV manufacturers could be required to prevent DTS virtualization or up-mixing methods (like DTS Neural:X or Virtual:X) from being activated on tracks using a Dolby format. "In our view, Dolby’s policy was anti-competitive, anti-consumer, and a blatant abuse of Dolby’s industry position," said a spokesperson for Xperi. "We promptly took steps to address these concerns, including launching discussions with the European Commission and other regulatory agencies. The European Commission heard us, and engaged with Xperi and Dolby to resolve the issue." According to a recent statement on Dolby's website, Dolby's new stance withdraws "all limitations on the use of OEM (first-party) and third-party post-processing technologies (including upmixers and virtualisers) on audio decoded from Dolby formats (including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos) on AVRs, sound bars and TVs." The new policy is effective immediately for products submitted before January 1, 2021. In addition, Dolby will be offering guidelines for the use of first-party and third-party audio post-processing on Dolby formats for products submitted for approval after January 1, 2021. With that said, these new guidelines will not restrict third-party use. Sources: Xperi, DolbyPosted Tue Aug 27, 2019 at 12:30 PM PDT by:
