MoviePass Brings Back Movie-Per-Day Plan... For Now[teaser]New users can now sign up for the movie-per-day plan again.[/teaser] After temporarily pulling the deal last month, MoviePass is once again offering its flagship movie-per-day plan for $9.95 per month -- but it's not exactly clear how long the option will remain available. The service allows users to receive one ticket for a 2D theatrical film every day with no contract or blackout dates at supported theaters. The movie-per-day option was previously removed in favor of a special promotional plan that only provided four monthly movie tickets along with an iHeartRadio All-Access subscription for around $10 per month. As of press time, the site now offers two monthly plans: the $9.95 movie-per-day MoviePass Unlimited subscription, and a $7.95 Limited Time offer for three movies per month along with an extended free 3-month trial of iHeartRadio All-Access. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this multiple plan approach is likely going to be expanded in the future with even more subscription options, including a version that allows users to see films in 3D and premium formats like IMAX. With that said, the longevity of the movie-per-day deal remains in question as the site recently updated its terms-of-use to include "the right to change from time to time the number of eligible movies a member can see per month." Likewise, the site also recently altered its rules to prohibit users from seeing the same movie twice. This was apparently done to help prevent customers from reselling tickets for popular films. After signing up for the MoviePass Unlimited plan, users are sent a special MoviePass debit card. Customers can then select a theater and movie showtime from the MoviePass app. Once a user's smartphone GPS registers within 100 yards of the selected theater, subscribers can then check-in for the film they want to see. Credit is then transferred to the MoviePass debit card which can then be used to buy the ticket. Over 91% of theaters in the US currently work with MoviePass, but some chains have been attempting to limit their support, including AMC. Warner Bros. Preps DC Universe Streaming Service with New 'Swamp Thing' Series[teaser]More details on the upcoming streaming platform have been revealed.[/teaser] Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have revealed the official name for their new digital entertainment service. The subscription streaming platform will be called DC Universe and will feature several exclusive original live-action and animated series based on DC Comics characters. Though full release details, pricing, and device availability are still forthcoming, the recently launched preview page describes the service as "a first-of-its kind, immersive digital experience designed just for DC fans." Exclusive shows set to debut on the platform include a live-action Teen Titans series called Titans, a continuation of the Young Justice animated series dubbed Young Justice: Outsiders, a new animated Harley Quinn show, a live-action Superman prequel series titled Metropolis, and a newly announced live-action show based on Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing is being developed by co-writers/showrunners Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, along with executive producer James Wan (Aquaman). The show is based on the comic book series created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, and has a script-to-series order. Here's the official synopsis: When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland—only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous—and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all. Titans comes from executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, and Geoff Johns, and will focus on former Robin, Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), as he puts together a young crime fighting team with Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft), and Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). Additional cast members include Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly as the superhero duo Hawk & Dove. Young Justice: Outsiders will be a 26-episode continuation of the previously canceled Cartoon Network animated show about younger heroes on a parallel Earth. Original creators Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman have returned to help spearhead the revival, and the team roster will feature Static, Kid Flash, Robin, Wonder Girl, The Spoiler, Blue Beetle, Beast Boy, Arsenal, Arrowette, and Thirteen. Harley Quinn will be an adult-geared 26-episode animated series starring the Batman villain originally created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker (Powerless) are on board as writers and executive producers, and the show will feature additional DC characters like Poison Ivy, Clayface, Sy Borgman, Dr. Psycho, Malice Vundabar, and King Shark. Finally, Metropolis was originally being developed as a Superman prequel focused on Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as investigators, but this premise is now reportedly being retooled. On that note, Danny Cannon and John Stephens (Gotham) were initially developing the show, but it's now unclear if they remain onboard as the series undergoes it overhaul. DC Universe is expected to launch later this year with Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Harley Quinn. Swamp Thing and Metropolis are then set to hit the service in 2019. Netflix Preps 'Arrested Development' Season Five and Remix of Season Four[teaser]The Bluth family will return to Netflix just in time for "Cinco de Cuatro." [/teaser] According to a recent Facebook update by series creator Mitch Hurwitz, Netflix is set to premiere the fifth season of Arrested Development very soon. An exact release date hasn't been announced yet, but the post makes it sound like the launch is imminent. In addition, Hurwitz also revealed plans to stream a new remixed, recut version of the show's fourth season starting this Friday, May 4 -- also known to the Bluth family as "Cinco de Cuatro." Season Four of Arrested Development originally premiered on Netflix back in 2013, and featured episodes primarily dedicated to one member of the cast at a time. The idea was for a larger storyline to gradually emerge from the different perspectives as the season played out. This new version, titled Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences, has now been recut from 15 individualized stories into 22 interwoven episodes with all of the Bluths in each installment as the plot plays out in chronological order, potentially offering a fresh perspective and new jokes. You can read the full post from Mitch Hurwitz here! Arrested Development centers around Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) and his eccentric family comprised of his son George Michael (Michael Cera), his father George Bluth Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor), his mother Lucille (Jessica Walter), his brothers George Oscar Bluth II (Will Arnett), Buster Bluth (Tony Hale) and sister Lindsay Funke (Portia de Rossi), and Lindsay’s husband Tobias (David Cross) and their daughter Maeby (Alia Shawkat). The series originally aired for three seasons on Fox before its cancellation in 2006. In addition to the new Season Four Remix and upcoming fifth season, all four previous seasons of the show are now available to stream through Netflix. A current Netflix subscription starts at $11 for HD streaming and $14 for Ultra HD streaming. Source: Arrested Development (Facebook)Posted Tue May 1, 2018 at 01:10 PM PDT by: -
New THX Standard Website Offers Detailed Performance Evaluations for Displays & Audio Gear[teaser]The new website tests and rates various performance attributes for popular displays, amps, and speakers.[/teaser] Building upon the company's expertise in cinema and home theater certification, THX has announced the launch of its new THX Standard website. The site is designed to serve as a consumer electronics rating resource for a variety of AV products, offering objective and data-driven out-of-box performance evaluations to help buyers make more informed purchases. "For over 35 years, THX has set the industry standard for the audio and visual fidelity of entertainment experiences," said Min-Liang Tan, CEO, THX Ltd. "The launch of THX Standard exemplifies our commitment to helping our industry partners better understand what factors influence the audio and visual fidelity of products and bring better products to market faster. THX Standard reinforces our mission to make home and mobile entertainment come alive for consumers around the world." The site features sections for Displays, Amplifiers, and Speakers with detailed evaluations for various products from numerous manufacturers in each category, rating each component's out-of-box performance using industry standards and a proprietary testing methodology. The individual test scores for each attribute are then displayed along with an overall performance score. Likewise, users can click on the different evaluation elements to learn more about them and the testing processes used, along with the option to see detailed measurement results. In addition, visitors can also directly compare different models to see how performance contrasts across the board. Impressions To coincide with the launch, Peter Vasay, GM and SVP of THX Labs, was kind enough to speak with us about THX Standard and let us test drive the page. And after checking out some of the team's initial evaluations, the site looks like it's shaping up to be a very handy resource for consumers and manufacturers alike. With that said, THX stressed that the website's listings are not meant to act as traditional "reviews." Instead, the results are designed to serve as unbiased, purely data-driven measurements compiled to help educate buyers on product performance and various AV attributes. Likewise, the company made sure to distinguish its THX Standard site from its existing THX Certification program and logo. Though similar testing is used, a high THX Standard score does not actually provide or signify THX Certification on its own, as that is a separate process with spec/performance evaluations that manufacturers have to specifically opt into. If an included model does happen to have THX Certification, however, that will be detailed on the listing. On that note, both services have been designed to complement one another, and the THX Standard site does offer consulting services to help manufacturers improve their product scores and enter into the THX Certification program. (Color Gamut Accuracy u'v' for Sony XBR-55X900E) When it comes to evaluating THX Standard picture and audio performance, the site's engineers are currently focusing strictly on out-of-box results, with measurements conducted based on default settings without professional calibration. For displays, however, the team evaluates and takes into account a TV's Standard mode and default Movie/Cinema mode (which typically offers better accuracy). Scores based on full calibrations along with detailed settings are also a possibility for the future. At launch, THX Standard features about 39 products across TV, Stereo Amp, Multi-Channel Amp, Powered-Studio Monitor, and 2.1 PC Speaker System categories, with models from manufacturers like Sony, LG, VIZIO, TCL, Marantz, Anthem, Emotiva, Klipsch, Yamaha, JBL, Focal, Bose, and Harman Kardon. The initial lineup has been selected based on popularity, and THX purchases the units it uses for evaluation. More devices and product categories will be added over time with user and company requests set to be taken into consideration. When it comes to TVs, the overall score is broken down into 11 equally weighted categories, including individual scores for factors like Color Accuracy, Black Level, Gamma, HDR Performance (just HDR10 for now), Off-Axis Viewing, Uniformity, Artifacts, and more. Clicking on each section offers a description of the element and a break-down of what the engineers look for, along with applicable data and graphs with the results. For instance, the HDR performance section features a rundown of luminance levels for different object sizes, and a graph showcasing the display's RGB balance in HDR10 mode when transitioning from dark to light. (HDR Performance for Sony XBR-55X900E) Meanwhile, Amps are rated across 11 individually scored categories as well, including factors like Frequency Response, Crosstalk, and Noise, though, unlike displays, some of these elements are weighted differently based on importance. Finally, Powered Speakers are broken down into six scored categories and 2.1 PC Speakers are broken down into seven scored categories, with included elements like Frequency Response, Listening Window, and Low Frequency Performance. Again, clicking on each section brings up detailed info on the category with relevant data and graphs. In addition, users can select multiple models within the same product category to access handy comparisons, allowing visitors to view scores and data/graphs for each section side-by-side. Navigation is pretty simple and intuitive, with the top three highest scored products for each category highlighted on the main page and easy access to each section through a horizontal menu on the top of the page. Though the initial lineup is a bit sparse and mostly relegated to models from 2017 and earlier, the site demonstrates great promise and has the potential to become an invaluable resource for buyers and manufacturers. The scoring seems to be fairly strict and the equally weighted components for displays has resulted in somewhat surprising rankings (with one of last year's arguably top display models, the LG B7, in second place with a 70 overall), but the seemingly high standards leave room for manufacturers to continue to improve their products. And again, the page isn't meant to offer actual reviews. Instead, the detailed test results let the data speak for itself while informing consumers about different performance attributes and allowing them to draw their own conclusions based on the overall scores or the specific picture/audio factors that matter most to the them. The THX Standard website is now live, so be sure to check it out for yourself! Source THX StandardPosted Tue May 1, 2018 at 05:30 AM PDT by: -
Enhancia Neova MIDI Ring Creates Musical Effects Through Hand Gestures[teaser]The connected ring for musicians is now available for pre-order through Kickstarter.[/teaser] Enhancia is currently offering pre-sales for its Neova MIDI Ring as part of a Kickstarter campaign. With 16 days left to go, the company has already surpassed its fundraising goal. The unique connected ring is designed to add effects to a musician's performance via intuitive hand gestures. "As a musician, I believe that emotion is the purpose of each melody. In musical performance, subtlety is a key. Every intention, every micro-gesture should be captured to reflect the intensity of your feeling as truthfully as possible. We imagined Neova with the simple idea of creating the shortest path between your musical intention and music creation," said Enhancia's co-founder and CEO Damien Le Boulaire. Neova is a MIDI ring controller that gives musicians the ability to create musical effects through simple hand gestures. The device features 9 motion sensors to recognize five gestures, including Vibrato, Bend and Tilt for enhancing play with a user's hand on the instrument, and Wave and Roll for letting musicians control their music in the air. In addition to the ring, the package comes with a hub that connects via USB to a computer or via MIDI with supported instruments. Neova can synchronize to any DAW and is compatible with any software synthesizers and MIDI controllers. Likewise, the company has developed the Plume plugin with hundreds of sound presets natively mapped specifically to the ring. Pre-orders for the Enhancia Neova MIDI Ring are currently available via Kickstarter until May 17 with early bird packages starting at around $255. Units are expected to start shipping in March 2019.
