Everything on Amazon Prime Video in HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and/or Dolby AtmosAs 4K HDR TV and immersive audio adoption continues to grow, more and more content providers have begun to embrace HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos content. And when it comes to streaming services, Amazon Prime Video continues to offer a respectable library of HDR titles. Primarily consisting of the provider's own assortment of original series and movies, Amazon HDR support is available on virtually all current gen 4K HDR compatible smart TVs and media players with a Prime subscription. According to the company, all HDR content is available in HDR10+ via compatible Samsung 4K TV models and will default to that format on supported displays. Standard HDR10 playback is provided for displays without HDR10+ capabilities, and Dolby Vision is offered for select titles on Dolby Vision TVs from manufacturers like LG, Sony, VIZIO, TCL, and Hisense. Meanwhile, Prime Video Dolby Atmos playback is currently supported via several media players and smart TVs with Dolby Atmos output support, including the Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick 4K, Samsung TVs (2017 or newer), LG OLED TVs (2017 or newer), VIZIO TVs (2015 or newer), or Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X game consoles. Unlike some other streaming services, however, Amazon Prime Video doesn't make it quite as easy to find HDR or Dolby Atmos content through its platform on certain apps and TVs. Though scrolling down the smart TV app's "Homepage" does reveal Ultra HD categories for shows and movies, users have to select each title individually to see if they also support HDR. And even more confusing, if one switches from the "Homepage" to the "Originals" sub-heading, there are additional sections for Ultra HD shows and movies that include some titles missing from the homepage's categories and vice-versa. Likewise, searching for the keyword "HDR" does not pull up a list of HDR titles. What's worse, Amazon actually has separate listings for SDR and 4K/HDR versions of all its supported content, and only the SDR versions seem to ever appear in search results on some devices when a title is typed in. In other words, there might actually be some HDR titles currently not included in any of the app's sub-categories -- essentially making them impossible to find. And when it comes to audio, the service does not seem to currently designate Dolby Atmos support at all (Jack Ryan offers Atmos but is only labeled as 5.1 in its listing). With all that in mind, [teaser]we've scoured through Amazon's listings to offer a handy list of Everything on Amazon Prime Video currently available in HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and/or Dolby Atmos.[/teaser] Note: Format support applies to all seasons of a show unless a specific season is specified. FilmStruck Streaming Service Is Shutting Down[teaser]The digital platform focused on classic films is being shut down.[/teaser] Warner Bros. Digital Networks and Turner have announced plans to terminate their FilmStruck subscription streaming service. The platform first launched back in 2016 and has been the digital streaming home of the Criterion Collection's library of films. As of today, the service is no longer accepting new subscribers and is set to formally close on November 29. In addition, current subscribers should be receiving an email about refund options if applicable. In a statement released to Variety on the matter, Turner and WB Digital Networks said, "We're incredibly proud of the creativity and innovations produced by the talented and dedicated teams who worked on FilmStruck over the past two years. While FilmStruck has a very loyal fanbase, it remains largely a niche service. We plan to take key learnings from FilmStruck to help shape future business decisions in the direct-to-consumer space and redirect this investment back into our collective portfolios." FilmStruck offered a mix of contemporary and classic arthouse, indie, foreign and cult films from many major studios and independent distributors, including Warner Bros., Janus Films, Flicker Alley and Icarus. Likewise, the platform was the home of the Criterion Channel with streaming access to the label's collection of titles. Though it's not yet clear where Criterion will take its films just yet, the company stated on its website that they are looking to bring their content back to the digital space as soon as possible. Before teaming up with FilmStruck, Criterion previously offered its titles through Hulu. The termination of FilmStruck comes in the wake of recent news that parent company AT&T plans to launch a new comprehensive streaming service with content from Turner, HBO, and Warner Bros. in 2019. Google Play Announces Free 4K Upgrades for Previous Digital Movie Purchases[teaser]The service is now offering complimentary 4K upgrades for supported digital titles in your library.[/teaser] Google has announced several new 4K features and updates for its Google Play Movies & TV streaming service in the US and Canada. Starting today, the company is offering free 4K upgrades for previously purchased titles, along with reduced 4K movie prices and expanded 4K playback support for smart TVs. As part of the company's improved 4K experience, Google will now automatically upgrade previously purchased digital movies from participating Hollywood studios to 4K when available -- even if customers originally bought the title in SD or HD. In order to be eligible for the 4K upgrade, titles must have been purchased or redeemed from Google Play or YouTube. Supported studios currently include Fox, Lionsgate, NBC Universal, Sony (US only), and Warner Brothers. SD titles will only be upgraded if they were bought or redeemed before October 23, 2018. Google will notify users which movies have been upgraded when they open the Play Movies & TV app. Likewise, the platform will continue to add upgrades in the future as more 4K titles are made available from participating studios. And to go along with the free 4K upgrades, Google has also announced a price decrease for most 4K movie listings through the platform. In addition, 4K playback support has also been expanded to cover more smart TV models. Beyond existing support for 4K Sony Bravia TVs, 4K playback through the Google Play Movies & TV app is now available through most Samsung 4K smart TVs, and the company is also planning to add support for LG displays as well. Finally, the overall Google Play Movies & TV app design has also been updated for Samsung, LG, and VIZIO TVs, offering an improved user experience with a more modern look and feel. Google Play's free 4K upgrades and reduced 4K prices now place the service more in line with Apple's iTunes platform, which has already been offering similar features for Ultra HD titles. Both services are part of the Movies Anywhere digital ecosystem, allowing users to link accounts in order to sync their movie libraries from supported studios across multiple retailer apps and playback devices. Other participating retailers include Amazon Prime Video, VUDU, FandangoNOW, and Microsoft Movies & TV. Source: Google PlayPosted Tue Oct 23, 2018 at 09:00 AM PDT by: -

For this edition, we're covering the launch of Screen Innovations' Solo Pro ST projector screen, details on Dell's latest monitor lineup, and LG's newest 4K HDR monitor. So, without further ado, here's a rundown of some of the latest gear and tech news: Screen Innovations Reveals New Solo Pro ST Projector Screen Screen Innovations has announced its latest projector screen option. The company's ambient-light-rejecting Short Throw (ST) screen material is now available on the Solo Pro lineup. The Solo Pro collection offers customizable motorized screens allowing simple and quick installation in just 5 minutes by one user, offering a convenient wireless, rollable, and portable projector screen solution. Likewise, the system's lithium-rechargeable and low-voltage options let users easily configure the screen nearly anywhere without the need for an electrician. Meanwhile, SI's short throw screen material uses a microscopic lenticular optical technology geared toward use with ultra-short throw projectors positioned directly below the screen with support for throw ratios as close as 0.1 times the image width. With that in mind, the material is designed to accept light from directly below the screen while rejecting ambient light from above or perpendicular to the screen. "The extraordinary Short Throw screen material is very difficult to work with due to its optical qualities. It took almost two years to perfect a method to manipulate it to function in a motorized system. Thankfully, SI has the manufacturing capability to not only develop this methodology, but we also have the capacity to create repeatable results to scale for production." Said Tom Nugent, SI’s Chief of Material Technology. The Solo Pro with Short Throw material is now available for order. Shipments are expected to launch this month.
