Samsung Launches a 50" 3D Plasma for Under $1,000[teaser]The PN50C490 comes in at $989, making it the cheapest new 3D set.[/teaser] Remember back when 3D television was first being brought to market? There was a giant to-do about the price premium you might have to pay for the privilege of owning a 3D set. Samsung just shut that argument down. Samsung's new 50 inch plasma has an MSRP of $1,099 but is available right now on Amazon for just $989. You're not going find another new 3D television at that price, especially one that large. The downside is that you're looking at a 720p set. Depending on who you ask, the change in resolution from 720p to 1080p doesn't really matter when you're watching 3D. For two dimensional pictures though, it's pretty noticeable at the size. If you're looking for 1080p, Samsung's new PNC50C680 comes in at around $1,500, while the 58 inch PN58C680 sells for $2,300. There's no official date on these sets yet, but Samsung says to expect a release sometime later this month. Source: AmazonPosted Thu Aug 12, 2010 at 11:00 AM PDT by: -
Denon Launches a Compact Two-Channel Blu-ray System[teaser]Because sometimes you don't need a full 9.2 channel setup.[/teaser] Just because you're watching on a smaller TV, or in a less open space doesn't mean you don't want top notch audio quality from your Blu-rays. That's why Denon launched the new D-X1000BD Blu-ray system. As an amplifier, it pushes 70 watts to two channels. It supports Blu-ray discs, CDs, DVDs, and features two USB ports in the front – one for iPod and iPhone digital direct play and the other for flash memory. You can upgrade the unit to work with network steaming content as well. Denon's Blu-ray system also acts as a competent headphone amp, including Dolby Headphone, which delivers 5.1 channel surround right to your headphones. It's a fantastic setup for those times you want a more singular experience. Two speakers are included with the system, both of which feature Denon Dual Layer cone technology – also used in the high-end CX stereo speakers. The D-X1000BD will be hitting the UK this September at a price of around $1,250. There's no word on a US release date as of yet. Source: eCousticsPosted Thu Aug 12, 2010 at 10:00 AM PDT by: -
Samsung's "Free the TV" Challenge to Bring More Apps to Samsung Devices[teaser]It's also a great way to win some cash and gear if you're an app maker.[/teaser] App. It's a buzzword that simply refers to a program, but thanks to the iPhone it's taken over our vocabulary. Samsung certainly had that link in mind when it launched Samsung Apps. The Samsung App store has done alright, but it certainly hasn't exploded the way Apple's has, and Samsung would like to change that. They've got a contest running until the end of the month that will reward 14 different app creators with a total of $500,000 in cash and prizes. The first place winner gets $200,000, a 46 inch Samsung 9000 TV, a Blu-ray player and a 3D starter kit. As you'd imagine, prizes get lower from there. That's good news if you own a Samsung television since it means there will be plenty of new content on the way. Starting in November, the apps will be open to public voting, meaning you'll get a say in who gets a $50,000 cash prize. Source: SamsungPosted Thu Aug 12, 2010 at 08:00 AM PDT by: -

New York Sues Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi and LG Over Price Fixing[teaser]It's not the first allegation of this nature to hit the companies, and it may not be the last. [/teaser] The consumer electronics industry, like so many others, is frequently embroiled in law suits. The latest though, is of particular interest. It's not a business to business suit as is typical, but an instance of a state taking the companies to court. Andrew Cuomo, the New York State Attorney General, filed suit against Hitachi, LG, Samsung and Sharp on Friday over allegations of price fixing. "Our investigation shows that an illegal cartel eliminated competition in the marketplace for LCD screens, made its own secret decisions to boost prices, and then took steps to make those high prices stick," he explained. Cuomo is looking for some cash out of the group to help make up for the thousands of monitors bought by the state in the last ten years, when this arrangement was apparently taking place. This isn't the first time the companies have been brought up on price fixing charges, and several of them have pleaded guilty in the past. Phase Technology Intros the CineMicro One Speaker System[teaser]The 5.1 speaker system has plenty of room to expand. [/teaser] It can be difficult trying to decide on individual speakers when buying separates. You need to make sure your center channel isn't too weak and that your surrounds aren't too strong, and after a while it gets confusing. The latest offering from Phase Technology is a full speaker system designed to play nice. You can use the speakers with whatever your current receiver is, assuming it's not pushing over 100 watts per channel. The system comes with four satellite speakers, one center channel and an 8 inch subwoofer, and can be had in a glossy piano black finish at a price of $938. If you need to expand from there, you can pick up an extra pair of the two-way satellite speakers for $163. Source eCousticsPosted Tue Aug 10, 2010 at 09:00 AM PDT by: -
