Corning Unveils Gorilla Glass 4 with Improved Mobile Screen Protection from Drops[teaser]The latest cover glass has been designed with screen breakage protection in mind. [/teaser] Corning has announced the launch of Gorilla Glass 4. The company's new cover glass for mobile devices provides resistance from scratches and protection from drops on rough surfaces like sidewalks. "Corning® Gorilla® Glass has outperformed competing materials such as soda-lime glass and other strengthened glass, since it was introduced in 2007, and we're always innovating to push the limits of what glass can do," said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials. "With Gorilla Glass 4, we have focused on significantly improving protection against sharp contact damage, which is the primary reason that mobile devices break. Dropping and breaking a phone is a common problem, and one that our customers have asked us to help address." Gorilla Glass 4 is now up to two times tougher when it comes to drop protection than competing glasses. Likewise, the glass survived about 80 percent of drops from one meter onto rough surfaces during testing. The cover glass is developed with Corning's special fusion draw process and preserves the thinness, durability, and clarity of previous iterations. Specific products, including smartphones and tablets, set to use Gorilla Glass 4 have not been announced yet, but sampling and shipments are now underway.
