Staples Acquires Office Depot in $6.3 Billion Deal[teaser]The office and electronics store just bought its biggest rival. [/teaser] Staples has announced an agreement that will allow the company to purchase Office Depot. The deal places Office Depot's equity value at $6.3 billion. "This is a transformational acquisition which enables Staples to provide more value to customers, and more effectively compete in a rapidly evolving competitive environment," said Ron Sargent, Staples' chairman and chief executive officer. "We expect to recognize at least $1 billion of synergies as we aggressively reduce global expenses and optimize our retail footprint. These savings will dramatically accelerate our strategic reinvention which is focused on driving growth in our delivery businesses and in categories beyond office supplies." If the deal goes through, Staples will have pro forma annual sales of around $39 billion. The company is currently ranked third among top internet retailers and Office Depot is ranked ninth. The merger will likely help the store better compete with current internet champ Amazon. In addition to office supplies, both retailers have a growing selection of tech items, including computers, tablets, TVs, home audio products, and assorted gadgets, placing them more and more in competition with electronics giant Best Buy. Office Depot previously purchased former rival OfficeMax in 2013. The agreement is still subject to antitrust regulatory approval and Office Depot shareholder approval, but the deal is expected to close by the end of 2015. Baz Luhrmann's Original Series 'The Get Down' Heads to Netflix in 2016[teaser]The 'Moulin Rouge!' director's new show will be a music-driven drama series. [/teaser] Netflix has announced an upcoming original series from filmmaker Baz Luhrmann -- the director behind 'Romeo + Juliet,' 'Moulin Rouge!,' and 'The Great Gatsby.' Luhrmann will serve as executive producer for 'The Get Down,' and will direct the first two episodes and season finale for the 13-episode series. Shawn Ryan, creator of 'The Shield,' will also serve as an executive producer. 'The Get Down' will focus on 1970s New York City – broken down and beaten up, violent, cash strapped -- dying. Consigned to rubble, a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers are nothings and nobodies with no one to shelter them – except each other, armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans. From Bronx tenements, to the SoHo art scene; from CBGBs to Studio 54 and even the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center, 'The Get Down' is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco -- told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city, and the world...forever. "In this golden era of TV, the Netflix culture puts no constraint on creative possibilities. So it is a natural home for The Get Down, a project I have been contemplating and working on now for over 10 years. Throughout, I've been obsessed with the idea of how a city in its lowest moment, forgotten and half destroyed could give birth to such creativity and originality in music, art and culture. I'm thrilled to be working with my partners at Sony and collaborating with a team of extraordinary writers and musicians, many of whom grew up with and lived the story we've set out to tell," said Baz Luhrmann. 'The Get Down' is set to premiere on Netflix in all territories in 2016. A monthly Netflix subscription currently starts at $7.99 for SD streaming, $8.99 for HD streaming, and $11.99 for Ultra HD streaming. The service is available on a variety of smart TVs and media players, including the Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, Roku 3, Apple TV and Chromecast. Upcoming 4K Services & Devices: DISH 4K Joey, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Live 4K Broadcasts In addition to all of the current Ultra HD options, there are several 4K platforms still on the horizon. First up, is DISH's recently announced 4K Joey Ultra HD set-top box. The device is designed to integrate with DISH’s Hopper Whole Home HD DVR system and will be compatible with most brand HDMI 2.0/ HDCP 2.2-compliant televisions. Exact content has not been announced yet, but the 4K Joey is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2015. Meanwhile, the most anticipated 4K content option remains Ultra HD Blu-ray. Though the spec is still being finalized, Panasonic recently revealed a prototype player at CES and the format is expected to launch in late 2015 or early 2016. Ultra HD Blu-ray will likely support 4K/60p/10-bit video, High Dynamic Range tech, wide color gamuts, and HEVC (H.265) encoding for playback at a high bit rate of 100Mbps. Finally, it's likely that Ultra HD won't ever become truly mainstream until live cable/satellite/and OTA broadcasts are made available. Though a timetable for 4K broadcasts has not been announced, several companies have run successful Ultra HD test transmissions and the new ATSC 3.0 standard should make 4K content possible. While Ultra HD content services and devices have been expanding slowly but surely, there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to title selections and quality. 2015 is poised to be a big year for all things 4K, finally bringing worthwhile material to all those expensive, beautiful displays. For now, though, what do you think about the current crop of 4K services and titles? Which upcoming 4K devices or platforms are you most excited about?Posted Thu Feb 5, 2015 at 03:45 PM PST by: -

Amazon & Sprint Could Buy RadioShack Stores as Retailer Prepares to Shut Down[teaser]The electronics retailer is considering selling its store locations as it heads toward bankruptcy. [/teaser] According to a report from Bloomberg, RadioShack is in talks with several bidders about acquiring their retail locations once the chain files for bankruptcy. Potential buyers include Amazon, Sprint, and the investment group that owns Brookstone. If the deals go through, it will likely mean the end of all RadioShack retail locations, with the current crop of around 4,000 brick-and-mortar stores set to be either re-branded or closed down. Sprint is discussing the purchase of about 1,300 to 2,000 of the locations. Likewise, Amazon is also now rumored to be interested in acquiring some of the stores as well. The online retail giant has previously experimented with kiosks and pop-up stores, and the company could use the locations to promote its Fire TV media player, Fire HDX tablets, Fire Phone, and Kindle e-reader, as well as offer online customers a physical pickup and drop-off center. Negotiations are still ongoing, however, and it is possible that another bidder could come in to keep RadioShack in business. Source: BloombergPosted Tue Feb 3, 2015 at 08:00 PM PST by:
