Comcast Will Introduce 305Mbps Internet Speeds over Verizon FiOS Lines[teaser]This puts Comcast on top of Verizon in terms of speed, but not by much. [/teaser] Ahh, the blazing fast speed of FiOS. While most folks are stuck with sub-20Mbps internet speeds, FiOS customers are able to get themselves a ridiculously fast connection. Verizon's top tier package puts you at an impressive 300Mbps. Comcast, which is using the same fiber optic lines as Verizon, is upping that speed ever so slightly. Comcast's new tier comes in at 305Mbps – a difference you won't even notice, but that technically means they can say "faster than Verizon." There's no word yet on the rollout date. LG's Ultra High-Definition TV Goes on Sale in Korea This Year[teaser]It's coming in at 25 million won, or around $22,000 USD. [/teaser] The folks at LG have one very impressive set on the way. It's a TV that boasts a higher resolution than most gear can handle - 3,840 x 2,160. That means a potentially superior picture, assuming the source material is there. Of course, 84" of UHD goodness means more than just future-proofing for 4K. It means that you'll enjoy a 1080p resolution when using passive 3D glasses. That's something of a selling point to be sure, though active 3D glasses on UHD TVs will undoubtedly give you full resolution. Sure, the new set may be $22,000 and only launching in Korea, but it gives you a reason to have a receiver with 4K upscaling built in. Source: EngadgetPosted Mon Jul 23, 2012 at 09:00 AM PDT by: -
DirecTV and Viacom Reach Agreement – Pulled Channels are Back on the Air[teaser]The new agreement gives Viacom a bit more money and makes Epix an option, but not required. [/teaser] The battle between DirecTV and Viacom is finally over, which is certainly to the delight of DirecTV subscribers and those that watch Viacom's shows online. Channels have been returned, free online status has been restored and everything is – for now – back to normal. Judging by a report from Bloomberg, rates increased, but not by the 30% that was initially demanded. DirecTV will be paying 20% more for the channels, with Epix remaining an option for customers, instead of a requirement. Source: Multichannel NewsPosted Mon Jul 23, 2012 at 07:00 AM PDT by: -
The 75-Inch Samsung ES9000 is Coming to America[teaser]What initially sounded like a Korean exclusive is heading to the States in August for $9,999. [/teaser] When we first saw the news of a 75" LED backlit 3D Smart TV a few weeks ago we were impressed, but a bit saddened based on indications that we wouldn't be seeing it in the US. Samsung surprised us all today though, when they announced that the ES9000 will be hitting our shores next month. Even nicer is that the price in the US is significantly lower than in Korea. Instead of having to shell out the equivalent of $17,000, we'll only be charged $9,999 for the privilege. It's still not cheap by any means, but that change brings it down to a far more reasonable price point. Source: eCousticsPosted Thu Jul 19, 2012 at 09:00 AM PDT by: -
DirecTV/Viacom War Wages On[teaser]DirecTV says they've agreed to Viacom's terms – Viacom says they're making things up. [/teaser] Things are getting heated between the folks at Viacom and DirecTV, and it's getting worse. When this whole mess started, the companies were in disagreement on licensing fees – now they can't agree on anything. DirecTV says they've lost 17 channels while Viacom says they've pulled 26. Even more glaring is that the companies don't even have the same story when it comes to negotiations. DirecTV says that they've agreed to Viacom's terms, but are holding out because "Viacom insists that we carry the EPIX channel at an additional cost of more than half a billion dollars." Viacom fires back in their latest blog entry. "DirecTV's most recent press release regarding EPIX is one more complete work of fiction from the company." That language is about as nasty as PR tends to get. Source: EngadgetPosted Thu Jul 19, 2012 at 07:00 AM PDT by: -

Korea Selects LG to Develop a 60-Inch Flexible OLED[teaser]It's a part of the Future Flagship Program, which aims to create more jobs and income for Korea. [/teaser] The folks at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy in Korea have selected LG as the company that will lead them into the technological future by developing a 60 inch flexible OLED panel by 2017. The program is designed to create jobs in Korea and strengthen the country's position as a technology leader. The initial applications for the tech, as you might expect, will be commercial in nature. The sets could be used to wrap around columns to provide directions to passersby or, more likely, to advertise products. There's no word yet on whether a consumer grade flexible OLED will be brought to market, but it seems more prudent to get normal OLEDs out there first.
