Samsung QN65Q90RAFXZA 65" QLED 4K Ultra HD ($2,798) - As Samsung's top-of-line 2019 LCD display, the new Q90R QLED offers strong HDR brightness and color specs. And though blacks still aren't quite as impressive as an OLED panel, the display's full array local dimming results in some of the inkiest performance we've ever seen on an LCD. Quantum dot technology for wide color gamut coverage is featured as well, along with support for HDR10, HLG, and HDR10+ (but not Dolby Vision**). Smart TV functions with Bixby Voice control and Ambient Mode round out the premium package. VIZIO P-Series Quantum X 65" 4K Ultra HD TV ($1,600) - VIZIO's 2019 premium display rivals many competing LCD models that cost a lot more, and currently offers some of the brightest HDR performance on the market with peaks close to 2400 nits in Calibrated Mode. The TV features a bezel-less design with 4K Ultra HD resolution and full array local dimming powered by a whopping 384 zones. In addition, the set includes support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG high dynamic range formats with advanced quantum dot tech for close to 100% P3 wide color gamut coverage and about 84% coverage for the Rec. 2020 gamut. Meanwhile, the SmartCast OS offers on-screen streaming app support along with the ability to cast even more services to the display from a mobile device. Order from Best Buy Sony X950G 65" 4K Ultra HD TV ($1,498) - Though contrast performance isn't quite as strong as Samsung's Q9 or VIZIO's Quantum X, Sony's current flagship LCD for 2019 is also a great performer. Like its OLED counterpart, the display uses the company's Picture Processor X1 Ultimate, and offers a full-array local dimming backlight with X-tended Dynamic Range PRO. Likewise, the TV features Acoustic Multi-Audio by sound positioning tweeters. Finally, the display supports Netflix Calibrated Mode, IMAX Enhanced, Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG. Samsung QN65Q80RAFXZA 65" QLED 4K Ultra HD ($1,998) - Brightness and contrast are a little less robust compared to the Q90R, and some premium design flourishes are missing, but the Q80R offers very similar performance for quite a bit less. Like its step-up sibling, the TV features full array local dimming along with quantum dot technology for wide color gamut capabilities. HDR10, HLG, and HDR10+ formats are supported as well. Smart TV functions with Bixby Voice control and Ambient Mode round out the premium package. TCL 6-Series 65R625 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Roku TV ($800) - While overall specs are not on the same level as the models featured above, TCL's latest 6-Series display just might feature the best performance to price ratio of any new TV for 2019, helping it to clinch the last spot on this list. The 4K display features Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, along with the Roku OS smart TV platform. In addition, the set uses full array local dimming with 120 zones for improved black levels and contrast. And new for this year's model, the panel incorporates quantum dot tech for improved wide color gamut coverage. So, there you have it. This is not true; HDR10+ works really well. We are biased towards dynamic metadata HDR (Dolby Vision AND HDR10+) over static metadata HDR (HDR10) because dynamic metadata allows for more accurate HDR grading and more consistent results across various TVs. That all being said, the sad part about Samsung not including Dolby Vision has more to do with available content -- there are many more Dolby Vision movies and TV shows available on disc and streaming right now where HDR10+ is limited to Amazon Prime and a few discs coming soon. If there comes a day where all 4K content is available in both Dolby Vision and HDR10+, so the consumer isn't missing out, then it won't matter and we won't mention it. We would also be excited to see HDR10+ capability on more TVs. All we want is dynamic metadata HDR on as much content, and built into as many displays, as possible.Posted Tue Nov 20, 2018 at 10:01 AM PST by: -

Can Jonah Heston and the bots survive sitting through six cheesy movies in a row? Frontier: Season 3 (Netflix, November 23) - The series is an action-packed adventure drama following the chaotic and violent struggle to control wealth and power in the North American fur trade in the late 18th century. Told from multiple perspectives, the series takes place in a world where business negotiations might be resolved with close-quarter hatchet fights, and where delicate relations between Native tribes and Europeans can spark bloody conflicts. A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding (Netflix, November 30) - A year after Amber helped Richard secure the crown, the two are set to tie the knot in a royal Christmas wedding - but their plans are jeopardized when Amber finds herself second-guessing whether or not she's cut out to be queen, and Richard is faced with a political crisis that threatens to tarnish not only the holiday season, but the future of the kingdom. F Is For Family: Season 3 (Netflix, November 30) - From comedian Bill Burr and EmmyⓇ award-winner Michael Price, F is for Family transports viewers back to the 1970s, a time when political correctness, helicopter parenting and indoor smoking bans weren’t part of anyone’s vocabulary, let alone the norm. Featuring the voices of Burr, Laura Dern, Justin Long, Sam Rockwell and more. Baby (Netflix, November 30) - Baby is a coming-of-age story that explores the unseen lives of Roman teenagers. Loosely inspired by Rome teen prostitution scandal, the series follows a group of teenagers as they defy society in their search for identity and independence against the backdrop of forbidden love, family pressures, and shared secrets. Nicky Jam: El Ganador (Netflix, November 30) - From his humble and troubled start in Boston, to his downfall on the streets, to becoming the king of one of the most popular musical genres, this is not only the life of Nicky Jam, but the history of reggaeton itself. The reborn star has since received some of the most prestigious awards in the industry, sold out stadiums, earned the admiration of his colleagues and emerged as a leading exponent of urban music. Nailed It! Holiday! (Netflix, December 7) - Hosted by Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres, this holiday-themed competition sees home bakers with a terrible track record take a shot at recreating edible holiday masterpieces for a $10,000 prize. It’s part competition, part hot mess. Nailed It! Holiday is produced by the Magical Elves, with Dan Cutforth, Jane Lipsitz, Daniel Calin, Casey Kriley, Patrick J. Doody, and Gayle Gawlowski serving as executive producers. Jo Sharon serves as co-executive producer. Dumplin' (Netflix, December 7) - Directed by Anne Fletcher, DUMPLIN’ follows an outspoken plus-sized teenage girl named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald), who’s known as Will to her friends and Dumplin’ to her mother (Jennifer Aniston), a former beauty queen who now runs the local Miss Teen Blue Bonnet pageant. In her small Texas town, Will confidently ignores comments about her weight and listens to Dolly Parton songs obsessively. But when she decides to enter her mother’s pageant in protest, her bold move encourages other contestants to follow in her footsteps, redefining the town’s traditions in the process. The Hook Up Plan (Netflix, December 7) - Set in modern day Paris, the eight-episode romantic comedy series follows a group of friends who rally around their perpetually single girlfriend Elsa, who can't seem to figure out why she is so unlucky in love. In a misguided attempt to build back Elsa's confidence, Charlotte and Emilie hire a male escort to renew Elsa's faith in dating, relationships and finding love. Out of Many, One (Netflix, December 12) - True to its founding identity, the United States is still a nation of immigrants. Through the lens of five immigrants who are on their journey to U.S. citizenship, this film depicts some of the many threads that continue to weave the tapestry that is America. It is a reminder of its national motto, “E Pluribus Unum”, Out of Many, One. ROMA (Netflix, December 14) - The most personal project to date from Academy Award®-winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien), ROMA follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker for a family in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City. Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil of the 1970s. Cuarón’s first project since the groundbreaking Gravity in 2013, ROMA will also be available through Exclusive Limited Theatrical Engagements on November 21. The Protector (Netflix, December 14) - The series follows the epic adventure of Hakan, a young shopkeeper whose modern world gets turned upside down when he learns he’s connected to a secret, ancient order, tasked with protecting Istanbul. The Criterion Channel Set to Relaunch as Standalone Streaming Service in 2019[teaser]Criterion's streaming channel will return next year.[/teaser] Following increased outcry from the filmmaking community over the looming closure of FilmStruck, Criterion has announced plans to relaunch that platform's Criterion Channel as a standalone streaming service in the spring of 2019. The new Criterion Channel will be wholly owned and controlled by the Criterion Collection. And in addition to the company's own service, Criterion will also offer access to its library of titles through a new WarnerMedia digital platform set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2019. WarnerMedia previously announced the termination of its FilmStruck streaming service last month. The Criterion Channel has been available as an add-on for that platform since its debut in 2016. Though Criterion's streaming presence will live on, FilmStruck, in its current form, is still scheduled to formally close on November 29. Beyond the company's collection of films, The Criterion Channel will also include curated director spotlights, actor retrospectives, commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, and original documentaries. Likewise, the service will carry on with its guest programmer series, Adventures in Moviegoing, and regular series like Art-House America, Split Screen, and Meet the Filmmakers, along with its Ten Minutes or Less section, Tuesday’s Short + Feature, Friday Night Double Feature, monthly fifteen-minute film school, and Observations on Film Art. The new Criterion Channel is set to launch in spring 2019 for $10.99 per month or $100 a year. In addition, those interested in signing up for the service can also register as a Charter Subscriber now to lock in a reduced fee of $9.99 per month or $89.99 a year, along with a few other perks. FilmStruck May Return After Spielberg, Scorsese, Nolan, and More Petition to Save It[teaser]The classic film streaming service may live on in some form.[/teaser] According to a report by Deadline, WarnerMedia is planning to launch a new version of its FilmStruck streaming service at some point in the future. It's not yet clear if the new platform will retain the FilmStruck branding, but the reconfigured service is apparently being prepped as part of a package of WarnerMedia streaming platforms set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2019. The news comes after several prominent filmmakers and entertainment professionals petitioned the company to save FilmStruck, including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Paul Thomas Anderson, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo Del Toro, Sofia Coppola, Edgar Wright, Damien Chazelle, Barry Jenkins, Rian Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Barbara Streisand, and more. As part of the effort, two letters were written to WarnerMedia and signed by several of the above artists, elaborating on why the FilmStruck service should remain active. To read both letters in full, click here and here. At the moment, FilmStruck, in its current form, is still scheduled to formally close on November 29. And though WarnerMedia's potential new version isn't set to launch until late 2019, it's possible that the growing support from Hollywood filmmakers and subscribers could convince the company to alter its plans and release a new version earlier. FilmStruck first launched in 2016, and offered a mix of contemporary and classic arthouse, indie, foreign and cult films from many major studios and independent distributors, including Warner Bros., Janus Films, Flicker Alley and Icarus. Likewise, the platform was the home of the Criterion Channel with streaming access to the label's collection of titles. Source: DeadlinePosted Fri Nov 16, 2018 at 09:30 AM PST by: -
