Sony Announces 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector[teaser]An impressive new Ultra HD projector is among the company’s latest products being demoed at CES. [/teaser] Sony has detailed a new 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector. The device is capable of creating an Ultra HD image up to 147-inches. Designed to unobtrusively blend into a user's room, the short throw projector features a resolution of 4096 x 2160 and requires no special tools or installation. The device can be placed right next to most walls, instantly turning them into a movie screen. In addition, the projector supports current media services like cable, satellite, Video Unlimited 4K, and Netflix to deliver HD and Ultra HD content to your living room. Other features include Sony's 4K X-Reality PRO and Triluminous display technologies, 3D capabilities, and four HDMI inputs. TCL Reveals CES TV Lineup[teaser]4K, OLED, and zSpace virtual-holographic 3D displays are among the Chinese electronics companies latest TVs being demoed at CES. [/teaser] TCL has detailed its 2014 line of displays all currently being showcased at CES. The lineup includes curved-screen models and even a virtual-holographic display. "The global scope of CES makes it the ideal stage to unveil our newest product offerings such as the TCL line of OLED, Curved Ultra-HD TVs and the TCL X-key," said Hao E, acting CEO of TCL Multimedia and Vice President of TCL Corporation. "This year's lineup also features several products co-developed by our international partners and demonstrates our increasing global footprint as a leader in technology and entertainment." Among the company's offerings is a 55-inch OLED TV that promises a wider color gamut and superior contrast over traditional LCD displays. Next up is the TCL Curved Ultra-HD TV which features a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 and a curved display that is designed with the arc angle of the retina in mind. Even more intriguing, is the company's zSpace TV which uses virtual-holographic 3D imagery from zSpace to create interactive 3D images outside of the TV screen. The set comes with an infrared pen and 3D glasses. Finally, TCL will also be demoing an 85-inch TV with a Touch Pen geared toward artists, and a 110-inch China Star LCD that features multi-picture sharing so families can watch different programs simultaneously. Sony Spotlights 2014 4K Displays and Content[teaser]The Japanese electronics giant has detailed it latest array of Ultra HD TVs and media options. [/teaser] At its CES press conference yesterday, Sony unveiled its full 2014 lineup of 4K displays and announced new details about its 4K content delivery options, including expanded support for its Video Unlimited 4K Download Service and new partnerships with Netflix. "It may be cliche to say content is King, but when talking about 4K Ultra HD TV, it reigns over consumer decision-making," said Mike Lucas, senior vice president of Sony Electronics' Home Entertainment & Sound Division. "Sony is a company of firsts and we continue to lead the way with 4K from lens to living room. Couple our key industry partnerships with our group-wide collaboration and innovative technologies, and consumers will see Sony continues to lead, advance and enrich the 4K entertainment experience." Since launching in September 2013, Sony's Video Unlimited Service is now home to a growing library of more than 140 4K films and TV shows, including popular titles like 'Breaking Bad' and 'Elysium.' In 2014, even more new releases will hit the service, brining hit movies like 'American Hustle' and 'Captain Philips' to Sony 4K TVs. Likewise, Sony's new sets will support the HEVC codec, allowing for 4K streaming at 60 fps from other services like Netflix. In addition, the company is expanding its Ultra HD TV lineup to include three new series of LED displays with a total of nine models. The XBR X950B is the company's reference line, and will be available in 85 and 65-inch models. The high-end sets feature Sony's X-tended Dynamic Range PRO driven by direct LED arrays. Meanwhile, the mid-range XBR X900B will be available in 55, 65, and 79-inch models. These displays also incorporate Sony's X-tended Dynamic Range technology but use Edge LED arrays. Finally, Sony is also releasing the XBR X850B entry level series of 4K TVs. This line will be available in 49, 55, 65, and 70-inch sizes and does not feature the X-tended Dynamic Range tech. Samsung Details 2014 UHD TV Line and 4K Content Options[teaser]The company's full roster of 4K sets has been announced at CES, along with info on its Ultra HD media plans. [/teaser] At its CES press conference yesterday, Samsung revealed its full lineup of Ultra HD displays, including several curved-screen options. The impressive roster of TVs ranges in size from 50-inches to a whopping 110-inches and all of the models feature LCD LED panels and support HEVC, HDMI 2.0, MHL 3.0 and HDCP 2.2. In addition, the sets are future proof thanks to Samsung's external and upgradable UHD Evolution Kit. "Following last year's strong introduction of Samsung UHD TV, in 2014 Samsung will drive industry growth through tremendous innovation in UHD picture quality, breakthrough design and consumer choice," said HS Kim, executive vice president of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics. "The combination of our curved design and UHD picture quality creates the ultimate immersive entertainment experience for people passionate about entertainment. Samsung is well-positioned to meet UHD demand with our new roster of beautifully designed, feature-packed and future-ready Smart TVs." The lineup includes the Samsung 105-inch 21:9 Ultra HD TV, which is said to be the world's largest set of its kind. Next up is the U9000 Series Curved UHD TVs, which will be available in 55, 65, and 78-inch sizes. And if curved-screens aren't an option for you, the company is also releasing several traditional flat-screen models. The UN110S9 is a new 110-inch version of Samsung's highly rated 85-inch UN85S9, and is now among the world's largest 4K screens. Finally, there is the U8550 series which feature narrow 7mm bezels and are only 1.2 inches thick. 50, 55, 60, 65, and 75-inch models will be available. In addition, Samsung also announced details on its 4K content delivery plans. To this end, the company revealed an expansion of its "UHD Ecosystem" and will be working with Amazon, M-GO, Netflix, Comcast, and DIRECTV to integrate 4K content and streaming options through their respective applications. For their part, the company will also release its own UHD Video Pack, taking the form of an HDD loaded with 4K films and documentaries from 20th Century Fox and Paramount. A total of 50 downloadable Ultra HD titles are expected to be available through the service in 2014. CES 2014: DTS Expands Headphone:X and Play-Fi Ecosystems[teaser]DTS, Inc. had two announcements this morning at CES 2014 regarding the expansion of its Headphone:X and Play-Fi technologies. [/teaser] Play-Fi is "is an advanced open audio platform capable of streaming lossless, high-quality audio from Android, iOS and Kindle Fire devices, as well as Windows PCs, to multiple rooms, from multiple users, simultaneously using a standard home Wi-Fi network." In layman's terms, Play-Fi allows you to stream music to an entire home filled with networked speakers without any synchronization or lag issues. Pretty cool, right? Today at CES 2014, DTS launched the Play-Fi Certified ODM Program, which is to say, DTS is making it easier for manufacturers looking to build Play-Fi products to work with DTS-approved partners. Eastech Electronics Inc., LiteOn Technology Corporation, Meiloon Industrial Co. Ltd., Solidex Audio Corporation, Tymphany Corporation, Wistron Corporation, and Zylux Acoustic Corp have already joined the Play-Fi Certified ODM Program. LG Reveals Pricing and webOS details for Upcoming 4K, OLED, and Smart TVs[teaser]More details have been unveiled about LG's forthcoming display lineup at CES. [/teaser] At its CES press conference yesterday, LG announced estimated prices and release dates for several of its upcoming Ultra HD and OLED TV models. Likewise, the company also provided details on its webOS platform for Smart TVs. Let's begin with the 105UC9, LG's mammoth sized 105-inch ultra-wide 21:9 curved-screen Ultra HD TV. The 5120 x 2160p LCD display will retail for about $70,000, though a release period has not been revealed yet. Next, is LG's 77-inch 77EC9800 curved-screen 4K OLED which will retail for about $30,000 and is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2014. Leaving Ultra HD behind, the flat-screen Gallery EA8800 55-inch 1080p OLED TV will cost about $9,000 and should be available in the US this spring. In addition to its new TV lineup, LG also announced details about its new webOS Smart TV system. The platform was purchased from Hewlett Packard last year and redeveloped by LG for its TVs. The new interface is aimed at offering consumers a seamless and intuitive experience, providing user-friendly navigation, multi-tasking, and improved searching and connectivity. Toshiba Demos New Ultra HD Models[teaser]A new lineup of Toshiba 4K TVs is hitting CES, including the company's first Radiance Full Array LED Panel. [/teaser] Toshiba has detailed its latest crop of Ultra HD displays: the L8400U, L9400U, and L9450U series 4K TVs. All three models feature a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160. "We have expanded our 2014 4K Ultra HD TV lineup for what will be a quickly expanding 4K Ultra HD market," said Scott Ramirez, vice president of Product Marketing and Development, Visual Products, Toshiba America Information Systems, Digital Products Division. "Once people see Ultra HD they want Ultra HD and we have created a model for every customer. Because the driver for Ultra HD is incredible picture quality, Toshiba has invested in our own Radiance™ 4K full array LED panels and our third generation CQ 4K Engine to ensure a Wow experience every time you watch TV. Vizio Announces P-Series and Reference Series 4K TVs[teaser]New Vizio 4K displays with advanced local dimming are making their debut at CES. Both series feature Full-array LED LCD panels and offer a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160. The P-Series will be available in 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70-inch models, and features local dimming with 64 active LED zones, offering superior black levels, contrast, and uniformity. In addition, the set uses the company's Pure Pixel Processing Engine and includes Smart TV options with 802.11ac dual-band MIMO wireless and Vizio's Internet Apps Plus. The P-Series also supports the HEVC H.265 codec and HDMI 2.0, enabling 4K streaming from services like Netflix and Ultra HD playback at up to 60 fps. Positioned as the company's high-end platform, The Reference Series will be available in 60 and 120-inch models. The displays feature High Dynamic Range technology with 800 nit bright backlights, 384 active LED zones, Ultra-Color Spectrum 10-bit color support, and the Spatial Scaling Engine for 4K upscaling. Sharp Unveils CES Lineup and Innovations[teaser]Aquos 4K TVs, a wireless Universal Player, and 8K glasses-free 3D are all among the new products and tech announced from Sharp. [/teaser] Sharp has revealed a bevy of new TVs and innovations at CES 2014, including four different large-screen Aquos LCD television series: Aquos 4K; Aquos Q+; Aquos Quattron; and Aquos HD. "Our new line-up of AQUOS TVs provides customers with more higher resolution choices than ever before," said John Herrington, President, Sharp Electronics Marketing Company of America (SEMCA). "Not only does Sharp manufacture superior 4K and Full HD sets in a variety of large- screen sizes, our Q series and our new Q+ offerings provide viewers with even more resolution options, including picture quality never seen before from a 1080p panel." Sharp's Aquos 4K series offers full Ultra HD 2160p resolution with THX certified picture. 60-inch and 70-inch models will be available with prices ranging from $5000 to $6000. Meanwhile, The Aquos Q+ line features the highest resolution Full HDTVs on the market, serving as a midway point between HD and Ultra HD. Using the company's Quattron panel and Revelation technology, each pixel in the display is divided into two, resulting in 16 million subpixels. The Aquos Q+ series will be available in 60, 70, and 80-inch models ranging in price from $2300 to $6000. In addition, Sharp will also release the Aquos Quattron and Aquos HD series of 1080p displays, ranging in size from 60 to 90-inches with price tags starting at $1300 and maxing out at $9000. And if 1080p and 4K still isn't enough for you, then make sure to check out Sharp's 8K glasses-free 3D display. Developed in conjunction with Philips and Dolby, the 85-inch TV features a whopping resolution of 7680 x 4320, which is 16 times the pixels of a traditional 1080p TV. Finally, the company also announced the Sharp Universal Player. The device is the first product capable of wirelessly transmitting uncompressed sound at 24-bit/96kHz and video at 1080p. The player is WiSA compliant and can connect with up to eight WiSA compliant speakers. Support for SACD, CD, Blu-ray disc, and DVD playback is included and the device features 3 HDMI inputs, 2 USB ports, and an internet connection. Suggested retail price for the Universal Player is $4000. All of these products and innovations will be on display at Sharp's booth throughout CES 2014. While the 8K display is assumed to simply be a technology demo for now, Sharp's new Aquos lineup and Universal Player are expected to hit stores in the spring. Roku Details Roku TV[teaser]The company is partnering with TCL and Hisense to manufacture its own Smart TVs. [/teaser] Roku, the company behind the Roku 3 Streaming Media Player and several other popular streaming devices, has announced plans to license and integrate its software platform into Smart TVs. The initial lineup of Roku TV models will be manufactured by TCL and Hisense. "Consumers will enjoy the ease and satisfaction of Roku TV while manufacturers leverage our design specifications, content relationships and software expertise. At the same time the content community will gain additional distribution and revenues through an already popular and trusted streaming platform – now in the TV," said Roku Chief Executive Officer Anthony Wood. "I'm very excited about our partnerships with TV manufacturers and the first Roku TV models planned for release this fall from TCL and Hisense." The new Roku TV platform aims to simplify current Smart TV design, giving users a more streamlined and convenient experience. A home screen serves as a hub for all the TV's content, making it easy for consumers to access live shows and streaming media, which includes the full Roku Channel Store that offers more than 1,200 channels with 31,000 programming options.
