HBO Targets April Launch for Standalone Streaming Service to Coincide with 'Game of Thrones' Premiere[teaser]The cable giant is hoping to have its new streaming service ready in April 2015. [/teaser] According to a memo published by Fortune, HBO is planning to launch its standalone streaming platform in April of next year. This would allow potential customers to subscribe just in time for the season five premiere of 'Game of Thrones.' In addition to a tentative launch window, HBO has also revealed that it will be using a third party to drive the tech behind its new streaming venture. The company was previously developing its own in-house streaming system dubbed "Maui," but that strategy has now been scrapped. Instead, the network will license its streaming tech from MLB Advanced -- the company currently responsible for the tech behind WWE and ESPN's streaming services. The decision will allow HBO to focus on media development rather than technology. While an April launch is being targeted, HBO has not announced subscription pricing details, and it's still unclear how the company's existing streaming solution, HBO GO, will fit into their new strategy.
