Samsung Exits 4K Blu-ray & HD Blu-ray Player Market in US[teaser]No future Blu-ray player models are expected from the company in the US.[/teaser] According to reports by Forbes and CNET, Samsung has exited the 4K Blu-ray and HD Blu-ray player market in the US. A new high-end 4K model was rumored for release later this year, but following no announcements at CES 2019, it's now been confirmed that the company has no plans to produce any new models in the US going forward. With that said, it's possible that the company could continue producing players in other regions. While no specific reason has been given for the decision, Forbes speculates that the move has been made in response to the relatively niche nature of the 4K Blu-ray player space, increased market share from competitors like Sony and Panasonic, and Samsung's lack of Dolby Vision support. Though two 2018 Samsung 4K Blu-ray player models were announced at last year's CES, it does not actually appear that they were ever released in the US. This makes the company's 2017 lineup, led by the UBD-M9500, as its final run of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players. The news of Samsung's exit from the 4K Blu-ray player market comes just as the first wave of HDR10+ capable 4K Blu-ray discs are being released from 20th Century Fox. Samsung is one of the primary backers of the new dynamic metadata HDR format, and is the only manufacturer in the US to currently support the tech through its TVs. Though a firmware update has been released to support HDR10+ playback via the company's 2017 4K Blu-ray player lineup, Samsung's absence from the disc hardware market going forward could prove to be a drawback for the format. Outside of Samsung, Oppo Digital announced its own exit from the 4K Blu-ray player market last year. Meanwhile, Sony and Panasonic revealed a few new 2019 4K Blu-ray player models at CES last month. LG, however, has not detailed any new 2019 models yet. Sources: Forbes, CNETPosted Sat Feb 16, 2019 at 09:50 AM PST by: -
Coming Soon to Streaming: CATCH-22, TRIPLE FRONTIER, and More[teaser]A new Hulu adaptation of the classic Joseph Heller novel headlines this week's crop of streaming trailers.[/teaser] Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video have all released new previews and info for several of their upcoming series and films. Here's a full rundown of titles scheduled to arrive on each service: Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1 (Hulu, Now Streaming) - This is the story of Air Jordan 1, the shoe that tapped a cultural nerve deep inside a generation, unlocked the voice of so many voiceless and transcended sports to become a global phenomenon. Beyond the shoe’s iconic image and deeper than the legend of its namesake – Michael Jordan – Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1 explores AJ1's role in giving birth to sneaker culture, re-shaping the game of basketball and the very identity of the NBA. It revolutionized the business of the professional athlete as a brand and radically disrupted a generation to define our modern global culture on and off the court. Through a riveting journey of powerful voices that also include Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, actor Anthony Anderson, DJ and record producer DJ Khaled across all aspects of culture from then and now, the film chronicles the shoe's explosive impact on history and our modern world. Shrill (Hulu, March 15) - From Executive Producers Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks comes Shrill, a comedy series starring Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live) as Annie, a fat young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body. Annie is trying to start her career while juggling bad boyfriends, a sick parent, and a perfectionist boss. The Act (Hulu, March 20) - A seasonal anthology series that tells startling, stranger-than-fiction true crime stories. The first season follows Gypsy Blanchard, a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother. Her quest for independence opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, one that ultimately leads to murder. Catch-22 (Hulu, May 17) - Christopher Abbott is Yossarian, a bombardier, whose frantic obsession every time he goes up on a mission is “to come down alive”. His odds of success at such a simple aim keep getting worse, because Colonel Cathcart (Kyle Chandler) keeps raising the number of missions the men have to fly. More than the retreating Germans, the real enemy for Yossarian and his rag-tag bunch of friends is the bureaucracy of the military, inverting logic at every turn. The pinnacle of this is Catch-22, a military by-law which states that if you fly your missions, you’re crazy, and don’t have to fly them; all you have to do is ask. But if you ask not to, then you’re sane, and so you have to fly them. George Clooney stars as the barking mad, parade-obsessed Scheisskopf. Hugh Laurie is the mellow, slightly checked-out Major de Coverley. Clooney directs the six-episode series, along with Grant Heslov and Ellen Kuras. Chef's Table: Season 6 (Netflix, February 22) - The Sixth Season of the critically acclaimed series brings you four new groundbreaking stories of resilience, culture and culinary excellence. Featured Chefs will include Asma Khan (India + UK), Dario Cecchini (Italy), Sean Brock (South Carolina), and Mashama Bailey (Georgia). Juanita (Netflix, March 8) - Fed up with her deadbeat grown kids and marginal urban existence, Juanita takes a Greyhound bus to Paper Moon, Montana where she reinvents herself and finds her mojo. Starring Alfre Woodard, Adam Beach, and Ashlie Atkinson. Directed by Clark Johnson. Triple Frontier (Netflix, March 13) - A group of former Special Forces operatives (Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal) reunite to plan a heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America. For the first time in their prestigious careers these unsung heroes undertake this dangerous mission for self instead of country. But when events take an unexpected turn and threaten to spiral out of control, their skills, their loyalties and their morals are pushed to a breaking point in an epic battle for survival. Directed by Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year) and co-written by Chandor and Academy Award winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty). Love Death + Robots (Netflix, March 15) - Sentient dairy products, werewolf soldiers, robots gone wild, garbage monsters, cyborg bounty hunters, alien spiders and blood-thirsty demons from hell - all converge in eighteen NSFW animated stories. Presented by Tim Miller & David Fincher. Catastrophe Season 4 (Amazon Prime Video, March 15) - In the fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedy, Rob and Sharon’s relationship is pushed to the limit. Rob is sentenced to community service after his drunk driving accident while Sharon learns how to trust him again. This leads to exploring new life changes including career, religion, and health. Their love and humor have survived the ups and downs, but will it be enough to keep them afloat? Hanna Season 1 (Amazon Prime Video, March 29) - Follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl raised in the forest, as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is. -A current Netflix subscription starts at $13 per month for HD streaming and $16 per month for Ultra HD streaming. - A current Amazon Prime subscription costs $119 per year or $13 per month. Likewise, Prime Instant Video is available as a standalone service for $9 per month. - A current Hulu subscription starts at $6 per month with commercials. Apple Reportedly Set to Reveal New Streaming Service in March[teaser]Another streaming service is on the way.[/teaser] According to reports by Variety and Bloomberg, Apple is set to officially announce its new streaming video platform at a press event scheduled for March 25. With that said, the service itself is not likely to launch until the summer or fall. Though full details on the platform are still forthcoming, Apple's subscription video service will offer a collection of exclusive original series and movies, including content from filmmakers and talent like JJ Abrams, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Octavia Spencer, Jason Momoa, Jane Krakowski, and Hailee Steinfeld. Several of those stars and creators are expected to attend the March event, where Apple is likely to debut the first footage from its upcoming streaming titles. And beyond original programming, the streaming app will also offer integrated access to add-on subscriptions from other platforms for an extra fee -- similar to the Amazon Channels library available through Prime Video. Showtime, Starz, and other offerings from CBS and Viacom have all been named as likely inclusions, and HBO is reportedly in talks as well. Meanwhile, outside of Apple's new entertainment streaming platform, the company is also planning to reveal a separate news subscription service at the same March press event. According to Bloomberg, the news service will be integrated into the Apple News app, allowing users to pay a monthly fee for a bundle of different news publications and magazines. Amazon Teases LORD OF THE RINGS Series with New Map of Middle-Earth[teaser]"I wisely started with a map" -- J.R.R. Tolkien.[/teaser] In anticipation for the streaming platform's upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel series, Amazon has released an interactive map of Middle-earth via its newly launched Lord of the Rings Twitter page. Though the map does not include any location names or other specific details, users are free to zoom and scroll around the terrain. And as pointed out by Twitter user @tolkienthot, the map apparently depicts Middle-earth during its post-War of Wrath period since it does not include Beleriand. This points to the show taking place in the Second or Third Age. You can check out Amazon's original tweet embedded below or CLICK HERE to explore the interactive map yourself. Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, pic.twitter.com/unJj1Bpde1 — The Lord of the Rings on Prime (@LOTRonPrime) February 15, 2019 While plot details for the new series have not been announced yet, the upcoming show will be spearheaded by writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay. Amazon has also reportedly been in talks with director Peter Jackson about his potential involvement with the series, but the current status of those talks is unknown. Jackson previously directed the big screen Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies for New Line Cinema. Amazon's $250 million agreement with the Tolkien estate, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema covers the small screen rights to the Lord of the Rings franchise for a five-season commitment. Likewise, the deal also includes the potential for a spin-off series. With that said, in order to be in compliance with the contract, Amazon has to get production rolling on the project within two years. And it's looking like the whole endeavor could end up costing more than Smaug's treasure. All in, the budget estimate for the proposed five-season run is over $1 billion. An exact release date for the new Lord of the Rings series has not been announced yet, but the show will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. A current Amazon Prime subscription costs $119 per year or $13 per month. Likewise, Prime Instant Video is available as a standalone service for $9 per month. Top 10 Romantic Movies on iTunes to Watch on Valentine's DayValentine's Day is right around the corner, giving couples everywhere the perfect excuse to snuggle up on the couch with a bottle of wine and a great movie on TV. And if you're looking for the ideal flick to watch this year, iTunes has got you covered with a delightful collection of romantic films available to purchase or rent right now, offering you and your significant other a wide variety of viewing options tailor-made for a lovely date night basked under the warm glow of a 65-inch 4K display. [teaser]From clever contemporary rom-coms to bittersweet romantic dramas, these are our picks for the Top 10 Romantic Movies on iTunes to Watch on Valentine's Day.[/teaser].. Crazy Rich Asians - More than a welcomed advancement toward more diverse representation in Hollywood, Jon M. Chu's adaptation of Kevin Kwan's best-selling novel is simply a wonderful contemporary rom-com pure and simple. Filled with splashy visuals and heartfelt characterizations, the film adheres to familiar genre beats but manages to execute them all with wit, charm, and an appropriate amount of glitzy excess -- allowing couples to enjoy the characters' extravagant lifestyle from the comfort of their sofa. The Princess Bride – A quintessential postmodern fairy tale, Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride remains an endearing blend of sweet romance, exciting adventure, and clever humor -- all told through a story within a story by a grandfather to his grandson in order to impart one very essential lesson: "Never get involved in a land war in Asia." Also, "true love is the greatest thing in the world." Both are equally important takeaways. The Before Trilogy – Focused on one couple through three distinct yet irrevocably linked phases of their life, Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy creates an overarching cinematic conversation about relationships. Over a collective span of 27 years, viewers watch Jesse and Celine meet, reconnect, and then struggle with domesticity -- creating a stirring and palpably romantic examination of passing time and evolving love through the beautiful streets of Vienna, Paris, and Greece. A Star is Born – After three previous Hollywood versions of the same story, one might think the basic premise here would have already been milked for all it's worth. Thankfully, director Bradley Cooper thought otherwise. A powerful story about love and fame, the movie constructs an affecting, raw, and tragic relationship played beautifully by Cooper and star Lady Gaga -- who come together to create some truly captivating and gut-wrenching music together. Amelie – One of the most infectiously enjoyable films ever made, Jean-Pierre Jeunet's quirky French fantasy is a candy-colored celebration of romance. Fueled by an explosion of vibrant cinematic eccentricity playfully hidden behind a coy smile, the movie becomes a modern day fairy tale about lonely dreamers finding love. Even the most jaded of viewers eventually succumb to its charms, revealing a film so unashamedly sugary it's likely to give you and your significant other a toothache. The Big Sick – With their script for The Big Sick, writers Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani adapt their own real-life love story into a wonderfully entertaining and emotional romantic comedy -- signaling the arrival of a fantastic new voice for the genre. As cultural divides and unexpected illness band together to thwart the movie's central relationship, the filmmakers deftly reveal how tragedy can bring us together and force us to confront our true feelings -- all without ever losing a sharp sense of humor. Groundhog Day – Harold Ramis' high-concept comedy about a man reliving the same day over and over continues to be an enduring date movie staple and one of the best examples of the rom-com genre done right. As a selfish jerk given the chance to become a better person, Bill Murray's performance blends just the right amount of caustic wit and burgeoning compassion, allowing the character to fully earn his chance at love. Funny, heartfelt, and genuinely clever in its premise, this is a film that remains infinity re-watchable… over and over again. La La Land – A bold, colorful love letter to classic Hollywood musicals, La La Land both celebrates and deconstructs the unrealistically perfect romance of big-screen spectacles. Through gorgeous production designs and wonderfully choreographed song and dance numbers, the movie presents a charming tale about "the fools who dream." Marked by a decidedly bittersweet subversion of the genre's typical happy ending, the film is both incessantly joyful and quietly devastating. Titanic – An epic romance set amidst the backdrop of one really big boat, James Cameron's massive blockbuster is really just a simple love story at heart. Rose and Jack have become an iconic silver screen couple, resulting in a tragic tale of youthful passion with a tear-jerking conclusion that is still likely to leave viewers weeping … and screaming at their TVs about how there was clearly enough room on that damn floating door for both of them! The Apartment – Through the simple tale of a lonely "schnook" who learns how to be a real "mensch," legendary director Billy Wilder comes away with one of the most influential romantic dramedies ever made. Led by a seamless mixture of pathos and humor, and effortless chemistry between stars Jack Lemmon and Shirley Shirley MacLaine, the movie feels just as fresh today as it did when first released nearly 60 years ago. A masterpiece of the genre through and through, the film comes about as close as any to answering that lingering question we all ask ourselves at one point or another... "Why do people have to love people anyway?" So there you have it, those are our picks for the Top 10 Romantic Movies on iTunes to Watch This Valentine's Day. What do you think of our selection? Will you be cozying up on the couch to watch any of these flicks with your significant other? Do you have recommendations for other great romance movies?
