Vizio Brings LED Backlighting to Small Screen LCDs

A pair of backlit LCDs in 19” and 23” models will be hitting stores soon.

Let’s face it, small screen HDTVs don’t get a lot of love (unless they’re OLED anyway). They’re equipped with the absolute cheapest options available and marketed towards a user base that is looking for the cheapest possible way to get a small HD set. Anyone that wants a smaller set with big set features is out of luck. Vizio is banking on there being a lot of these people with the announcement of the VM190XVT and VM230XVT LED backlit LCD televisions.

Both of Vizio’s backlit LCDs feature a thin design, with a profile of less than an inch. Both offer contrast ratios of 20,000:1 and SRS TruVolume and TruSurround HD as well as a response time of only 5ms.

The primary difference between the two televisions is that, although it may be too small to be noticed anyway, the 19” VM190XVT is 720p, while its 23” bigger brother offers a full 1080p picture. Interestingly, according to Vizio’s site, the 19” model also lacks a remote.

The VM190XVT will run $349 when it is released, and the VM230XVT will sell for $399. No release date has yet been announced.

Vizio’s VF551XVT Available Now at Just Under $2,000

The first local dimming television from Vizio, and the cheapest on the market in its size, the Vizio VF551XVT is now available.

For a $2,200 MSRP and a $1,999 street price, the newest television from Vizio offers local dimming LED lighting, a 55” screen and 240Hz refresh rate. The lower pricing doesn’t come without sacrifice however. The VF551XVT is missing a few things that have become standards on Vizio’s higher end TVs.

Vizio’s new display is without options for viewing of networked or internet based content. According to Laynie Newsome, Vizio’s VP of Marketing, this choice was completely intentional. “We didn't want to wait any longer to introduce the breakthrough picture quality enhancements of TRULED and Smart Dimming technology to our customers at a previously unattainable price point,” stated Newsome. “We feel there is a strong market demand for this type of television today at this price. And those who are interested in the internet content capabilities won't have long to wait.”

The VF551XVT is considerably cheaper than other fully backlit LCDs, and features a total of 960 LEDs spread across 80 control blocks, for an impressive image. The set also offers 240Hz Smooth Motion technology, which combines 120Hz technology with scanning backlight, ensuring a smooth picture.

Vizio Tops LCD Sales Again

The company can boast three of the top five HDTVs sold.

In 2009’s second quarter, Vizio tops the charts yet again. It’s not shocking considering the distribution Vizio has and their reputation for making a high quality entry level display. According to analyst Riddhi Patel, “The company seems to have found the right balance between features and price that appeals to many consumers.”

While the top sellers were smaller models, all with sub $500 MSRPs, Vizio had a 101% growth over last quarter in the 55” category, with their highest year to year growth being in 40”+ displays. Layne Newsome, co-founder of Vizio explains why. “VIZIO is number one again because consumers want to enjoy the latest technology like Full HD 1080p, 120/240Hz SPS, and they appreciate the value that VIZIO provides”

A fairly unknown name only a few years ago, Vizio now holds roughly 22% of the LCD market, with Samsung at 21% and other companies far behind. Vizio’s press release points at the lagging economy as a strong factor, as well as partnerships with stores like Target, Costco and Wal-Mart.

Vizio Teams Up With SRS for Sound On Entire 2009 Lineup

Over 34 new Vizio television models will ship with one or more SRS audio solutions integrated into the set.

A press release from earlier this week saw SRS as very proud of their inclusion in Vizio sets. Options range from the E series, which will have either SRS TruSurround HD or TruSurround XT, to the high performance XVT series which will feature TruSurround HD as well as TruVolume.

TruSurround HD is a process whereby up to a 6.1 channel signal is processed for playback over the pair of built in TV speakers. Using a series of algorithms, the TruSurround technology virtualizes the channels, creating ‘phantom’ speakers and giving a crisp and clear listening experience.

Laynie Newsome, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for VIZIO speaks highly of the effort, stating “With the outstanding support of SRS' engineering staff and technologies, VIZIO's HDTVs are optimized to deliver audio excellence and a completely immersive entertainment experience”

Vizio Wins US Customs Ruling – No Infringement Found

A huge victory for Vizio, but it’s not over yet.

In an ongoing legal battle between Vizio and Funai, the United States Customs and Border Protection Agency ruled that Vizio’s televisions do not violate any copyrights held by Funai and that Vizio may continue importing their line of HDTVs.

”We are pleased that Funai's ill-advised tactics continue to falter and are being rejected by the U.S. authorities; we are determined and remain unshaken by merit-less claims from foreign competitors.” says Laynie Newsome, Co-Founder & Vice President of Sales and Marketing Communications in a recent press release. “In light of Funai's abusive actions, which were apparently anti-competitive in nature, designed to tortuously harm VIZIO's interests, we shall fully defend against any such claims and seek all appropriate remedies. In addition to recovering damages for such wanton behaviors, we shall hold the accused patent infringers, like Funai, accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Looks like Vizio’s going to keep this one going all 12 rounds.
