Samsung Adds Amazon and Blockbuster Support
Fri Oct 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Samsung, Amazon, Blockbuster, Streaming Content (all tags)
Samsung has officially released the new firmware for their TVs, HTiBs, and Blu-ray players, which will enable access to Blockbuster and Amazon’s digital delivery services.
Getting added value out of already purchased products feels so nice. Samsung’s definitely upped the ante by adding the pair of services to a fairly wide range of devices.
Owners of Samsung Plasma Series 650 and above, as well as those having LEDs Series 7000 and above will now have access to Amazon’s Video on Demand service through an Internet@TV widget. This addition gives customers access to over 50,000 movies and television shows available for on demand rental or purchase. Over 2,000 of the titles are in high definition, and all can be viewed not only from the TV, but from computers and other compatible devices.
Blockbuster On Demand has been added to the same line of TVs as Amazon’s service, but also to Samsung BD -P1600, BD-P3600 and BD-P4600 Blu-ray players and Samsung Blu-ray integrated Home Theater Systems HT-BD1250, HT-BD3252, HT-BD7200 and HT-BD8200. In a case of “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” Blockbuster will begin carrying Samsung’s capable Blu-ray players in their stores.

Amazon Jumps Into Cable Game With AmazonBasics
Tue Sep 22, 2009 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Amazon (all tags)
Looking to fill a much overlooked niche, Amazon is marketing its own line of inexpensive home theater cables. Priced to compete with online retail specialists like Monoprice, Amazon is hoping that the exposure their site grants and the Amazon brand name will bring in the sales.
Prices are surprisingly good. For $8.35, you can get a 3 meter HDMI cable. Oddly enough, for an extra fifty nine cents, you can get their 2 meter HDMI cable. They offer high performance cables as well, which are priced like high performance cables, at around $40 for 3 meters.
Everything from AmazonBasics qualifies for free shipping (for orders over $25) and ships in Amazon’s “Frustration-Free Packaging”. Forgoing slick looking but hate inducing clamshell packaging, Amazon simply pops the cable into a cardboard box and sends it on its way.
AmazonBasics products will ship soon and are available for pre-order now for US based buyers.

Zune HD Priced and Dated by Amazon
Wed Aug 12, 2009 at 01:30 PM ETTags: Microsoft, Amazon (all tags)
The 16GB and 32GB models come in cheaper than the iPod touch.
Though it appears to be down now, yesterday Amazon launched a product page for the Zune HD detailing not only pricing, but a release date for the highly anticipated portable video and music device. Seen as a strong competitor to the iPod Touch, the Zune HD is priced appropriately.
The 16GB model, the smaller of the two will sell at a price of $219.99, roughly $45 cheaper than the equivalent sized iPod Touch on Amazon. The 32GB player looks to sell at $289.99, a full $80 cheaper than the 32GB iPod Touch on Amazon, and $110 cheaper than buying the Touch directly from Apple.
Certainly Apple will have a retort in the coming months, but with the Zune capable of 720p video output and access to high def content via the Zune marketplace, Apple may have some work ahead of them.

Amazon To Purchase Netflix?
Tue Jul 14, 2009 at 04:10 PM ETTags: Netflix, Amazon, Industry Trends (all tags)
Stocks have seen a surge at the rumor of takeover.
There’s quite a bit of talk about the purchase of Netflix, a video service that has grown substantially since it first started in 1997 and has seen significant increases in membership since the introduction of their streaming service. Of course, when one company is doing well, everyone else naturally wants to get a piece of that success. Enter Amazon.
Essentially the Wal-Mart of the internet, Amazon parlayed an online book store into one of the biggest shopping sites on the net today. They offer products ranging from the aforementioned books to pacifiers, Blu-ray players, clothing, music, and even video on demand. Could it be that Amazon is looking to expand even further?
Industry analyst Michael Pachter says no, and all because of sales tax. “Suddenly in a whole bunch of states Amazon finds itself taxable, it would kill their core business.” That doesn’t seem like a huge deal to most of us, but recently Amazon stopped ads in several states to avoid having to pay sales tax. More taxes mean higher prices, and that’s not what Amazon is about.
Analysts agree that Netflix does seem to be in the position to be taken over, but the question is when, and by whom.
