The acclaimed filmmaker best known for 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'Philadelphia' has passed away.
MSN.com is reporting that Jonathan Demme has died after losing his battle with esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease. Demme was in the director's seat for numerous other films and first made his mark on Hollywood with 1980's 'Melvin and Howard.' In 1986, he directed Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith in the quirky road trip comedy, 'Something Wild'.
Demme is survived by his second wife Joanne Howard and their three children: Ramona, Brooklyn and Jos. He was 73 years old.
