Vivo Reveals World's First Quad HD Smartphone

The Chinese company has announced plans to release a 2560 x 1440 phone.

In a recent teaser for its latest products, Vivo announced plans to produce the world's first smartphone with a 2560 x 1440 display, the Vivo XPlay 3S. As of now, the highest resolution available on mobile devices maxes out at 1080p.

Vivo is dubbing the new screen resolution "2K" and while it's not clear how large the panel will be, it's possible that the company is using the 5.5-inch 538ppi Quad HD display that LG announced in August. The Vivo XPlay 3S will also feature a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 4G support.

Pricing and availability have not been detailed yet, but it's unlikely that the phone will be available outside of China. Still, the arrival of the first Quad HD smartphone implies that other companies could follow suit as well, and necessary or not, 2560 x 1440 displays or even 4K panels could become the next major push from smartphone manufacturers.
