Microsoft Details Surface Pro 3

The new HD tablet is geared toward offering customers a lightweight laptop alternative. 

Microsoft has fully unveiled its latest Surface tablet model, the Surface Pro 3. The versatile 12-inch device features many of the benefits and performance options of a laptop in a highly mobile and convenient design.

"So many people carry both a laptop and a tablet but really want just one device that serves all purposes," said Panos Panay, corporate vice president, Microsoft Surface. "Surface Pro 3 is the tablet that can replace your laptop — packing all the performance of a fully powered laptop into a thin, light and beautifully designed device. You’ll love being able to carry a single device for your next class, workday or weekend getaway knowing you have all the power you need."

The Surface Pro 3 features a 12-inch ClearType display with a resolution of 2160 x 1440. The tablet runs Windows 8.1 Pro and is available in Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 configurations with 4GB or 8GB RAM options. Likewise, customers can choose between 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB storage sizes. A new, redesigned Surface Pen is also included, giving users 256 levels of pressure sensitivity. A kickstand is offered as well along with an integrated 5MP rear camera and a 1080p front camera. For full laptop functionality, customers can also purchase a separate Surface Pro Type Cover and Docking Station. The tablet is rated for up to nine hours of web-browsing battery life.

Pre-orders are set to go live on May 21 through Microsoft retail and online stores and select third-party retailers. Models will start out at a suggested retail price of $799.
