Netflix Will Include 5.1 Surround This Year – 1080p Eventually

It’s a shame to let all those speakers go to waste when streaming a video from Netflix, but the company says that 5.1 surround sound is on the list for this year.

It’s a bit of a conflict to be a fan of Netflix and a fan of good home theaters at the same time. Sure you love your Blu-ray player, your HDTV and your surround setup, but it’s hard to deny the convenience of streaming video, even if the quality isn’t quite there yet.

Users of the service will be delighted to know that 5.1 channel sound is finally on its way to Netflix. There’s been no mention of a release date, but Netflix has confirmed that their giving the service an audio boost before the end of 2010.

Sadly, it looks like we’ll still have to wait for 1080p video, which Microsoft’s Zune service is already streaming. While early reports stated that Netflix would be adding higher resolution streams, the company was quick to correct the misinformation.
