No Native Disc Playback on Windows 8

Posted May 8, 2012 at 11:00 AM PDT by Dick Ward

Microsoft says that people rarely play discs on their PCs, and when they do they use 3rd party players.

The folks at Microsoft dropped some pretty big news last week – there will be no native Blu-ray or DVD playback built into Windows 8. Of course, the amount of people affected by this may be smaller than you might think.

"Online sources are growing much faster than DVD and broadcast TV consumption, which are in sharp decline," says Bernardo Caldas of the Windows Business Group. He's speaking strictly in relation to PCs, adding that sales of Blu-ray drives and playback of Blu-rays on Windows computers have declined greatly.

Due to the lowered use of DVD and Blu-ray on PCs and the third-party cost for decoders, Microsoft has decided to drop the functionality completely.
